Kilauea Volcano Adventure (Hike)

Description

Over the course of this tour, you'll get an idea of just how big the Big Island really is! Meet our friendly & knowledgeable tour guides at either the Waikoloa Kings Shops or our headquarters in Kona.

Travel up the coast over desolate lava flows for about 30 minutes before proceeding up the rolling pasturelands on the flanks of Mauna Kea. Then, turn onto Saddle Road, which traverses the island between Mauna Loa & Mauna Kea.

Experience a dramatic landscape of ranchland, sub-alpine dryforest & rainforest, which boasts striking features like cinder cones, lava flows, lava tubes & kipuka, a Hawaiian term for an "island" of land completely surrounded by younger lava flows.

Stop for a short break and continental-style breakfast. Descend closer to sea level on our way through Hilo, where we begin the final climb to the summit of Kilauea and the lush entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Explore and learn about the world's most active volcano! A World Heritage Site & an International Biosphere Preserve, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers native rainforest, lava tubes, remarkable volcanic formations & an amazing diversity of geography & climate.

During your adventure through the park, stop for a deli-style picnic lunch. Depending on what's happening with the active flow, we'll head to the red stuff for viewing - so don't forget your camera!

On the way back to Kona, travel along the Hamakua Coast and pass through Waimea before returning to Kona. By the end of the day, you'll have traveled over 300 miles and experienced an elevation change of over 30,000 feet!

This was the perfect way for us to get oriented on the first full day of our trip to the big island. Ethan was informative, safe, and made the 12-hour day fly by. Even the kids (9 and 11) were engaged throughout. The van was big enough so I didnt get carsick on the winding roads, and small enough to personalize the tour. We appreciated that Ethan was flexible and knowledgeable enough (expert college-educated geologist and long-time resident!) to adapt our tour to the weather, volcano status, and needs/interests of the group. The food was great, too! The only thing I missed was island culture/folklore - I remember hearing stories about the Hawaiian gods when I was on a similar tour as a kid - but that wasnt the purpose of this tour. It was definitely worth the price and the time.

This adventure hike was exactly what I hoped it would be - fantasticly knowledgable guide, small number of participants, comprehensive explanations of not just the volcano facts & history but also native plants, island history & culture, geography, and a bit of astronomy. This tour was the main reason why I came to the Big Island and it was even better than I had been told. It was nice to have a guide that walked with us & explained what we were seeing. We saw the drivers of other tours just hanging out with other bus drivers in the parking lot while their passengers tried to walk & read a guidebook. Worth every penny of the cost.

We had a wonderful guide providing so much more than we ever would have gotten on our own. She didn't just drive by and show us the view, she educated us and we came away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the beautiful island. We cant wait to come back again!

Our tour guide from Hawaii Forest and Trails was excellent and provided a great tour. It was an extremely long day, made even longer by heavy traffic coming back into town, but he made us all feel like he was there to show us the real Hawaiian experience and give us a great day and he took the delays all in stride. He made extra effort to see that we were all comfortable from the temperature in the bus to water/juice/soda breaks and a great lunch.

Our tour guide was the very best. The weather was shocking but he made the day brilliant, very informative, and we did get to see the crater if only for a few seconds. Cannot speak highly enough of the tour.
