Description
Meet our friendly & knowledgeable tour guides at the Waikoloa Kings Shops. Hop onboard our comfortable, air-conditioned van for a scenic drive to the Kohala countryside and journey from the dry-side resort area to the lush green country of Kohala.
Along the way, you'll travel up the Kona-Kohala coastline over lava flows from Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea & the Kohala Mountains. See if you can spot splashing Spinner Dolphins, or in the winter months, breaching Humpback Whales.
Pass through the quaint plantation towns of Hawi and Kapa'au, site of the life-size statue of King Kamehameha the First. Then, enjoy a little off-road adventure in a 6x6 Pinzgauer. Ramble through a landscape of rushing streams, towering ocean cliffs and cascading waterfalls!
Stepping out of the Pinzgauer, you'll embark on a journey into the early 1900's, when the plantation owners began the construction of the Kohala Ditch Trail to bring much needed water to the sugar cane fields.
Along the 1.5-mile loop trail, you'll see tunnels blasted and carved from solid rock, walk over the aqueduct on three bridges and learn the story of the tremendous effort it took to build this irrigation system, which stretches over 40 miles. Delve into ancient Hawaiian history as well, visiting a former taro farming site just off the path.
Seven beautiful waterfalls grace the trail, and you can take a refreshing dip in the last pool we visit. Sit under a cool cascade before returning to the trailhead and our comfortable van. Then, enjoy a relaxing drive back to the Waikoloa Kings Shops.
With stunning mountain panoramas, green valleys, pasturelands & abundant water, our adventure is a fascinating way for you to experience Hawaii. Our hikes are not difficult - we like to call them walks rather than hikes. We walk at a very leisurely pace and stop often to point out interesting features on the trail. There is generally no elevation gain or loss on our walks.
Sometimes, if we can't drive to the trailhead, we may need to take a short walk uphill (1/2 mile or less). If it rains, we provide raingear for our guests, and we only cancel when weather makes transportation or walking hazardous.

Restrictions:
Guests must be able to walk over uneven muddy terrain and to make short climbs. Children under 3 years old must be carried in a backpack carrier.

Our tour guide was fantastic. His understanding of Hawaiian history and culture, combined with his knowledge of the natural environment, was very educational and entertaining. The best part of the tour was being able to go to remote areas that even locals do not have access to. An all-round great experience.

The guide was very knowledgeable and at the same time very personable. We had a great time and since my daughter is only 10, that is saying something.

We've taken many tours between our visits to Oahu and the Big Island. Your guide made this particular tour the absolute best, most unforgettable tour ever. Mahalo!

We really enjoyed the tour and found it very informative. Our guide was excellent and it was obvious he loved his job and the island. If it wasn't for the mosquitoes the day would have been perfect. But that's nature for you!

Very enjoyable and highly informative. I will recommend it to others. I cannot imagine how you could change or add to this activity to make it what you would call, "absolutely fantastic".

This was a really great hike. We took our 14 month old granddaughter in a hiking backpack and she enjoyed it alot. Our tour guide was really great. We would have liked to of been able to swim in the waterfall a little longer. It was only about a 15 - 20 minute swim.

Wonderful experience with a small group hiking in privately owned land. Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. We learned a lot in this fun adventure.

The only good thing about this hike was that the tour guide was nice. I saw this hike on the travel channel and booked it specifically because it said we would be hiking a 300 foot waterfall and would be able to walk behind it. It also stated that if we were afraid of heights, the hike was not recommended. When I booked it from the website, it said exactly that, but when we got there, it turned out to be a man made circle 'walk' on about 2 acres of land that just happened to have a few 20 or 30 foot waterfalls. There were no heights to be scared of. Then, at the end, we got a 'snack' of banana bread and fruit. It was basically a nature hike and was NOTHING what the web site said it was going to be. Then after I got home from the hike, the website had magically changed to exactly how I described it. I saved the link from when I booked it. For $110 dollars it was NOT worth it, I won't be back.
